Love At First Glance! Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Material Paper • Film • Specialty Products • Melbourne 03 9706 0222 • Sydney 02 9533 9633 • Brisbane • Perth • Adelaide • yenom.com.sg A labelling solution that attracts customers to your fine wines at first glance and, most importantly, document for repetition all of the press parameters (plates, tapes, substrate, anilox, etc.) . This is the same for any print job, but with EG, presses must be profiled more carefully as the fidelity of the EG colour reproduction to the reference PMS colour depends completely on the profiling. Matching a reference PMS colour typically must be much closer than matching a CMYK colour build. Because of this critical match, it is important to quantify the capability of the press to meet the specified colours and then to communicate clearly with the customer what the expectations are when referencing deltaE spec limits. What typically happens, is that after profiling the press with given inks, plates, tapes, aniloxes, substrate, press speeds, etc., the PMS colour in the artwork probably can’t be exactly reproduced; it will be slightly off in L*a*b measurements. These reproducible L*a*b values become the “dependent standard” for that PMS reference colour. A printer should communicate to his or her customer that this dependent standard will be the nominal reference for any deltaE spec limit for the job. Said another way, one does not want to lose a large part of the deltaE tolerance to the nominal offset. After all of the upfront work is done and the job is ready for actual production, the onus falls on the operators to run the process consistently and “run to the numbers.” Spectro- photometers that can measure L*a*b under controlled lighting will make the job easier. The remaining work for successful implementation of EG falls into the realm of process control. EG is a process, and this means that a printer must manage all the process input variables that influence the colour result. There is little room for printer craft; everyone involved must adhere to the process. Anything that affects solid ink density must be monitored and controlled. This includes, but is not limited to, ink sets, anilox, ink temperature, plate material, tape, substrate, press speed, doctor blade system, etc. The effective volumes of anilox rolls must be tracked and managed and speed effects understood. Consistency of the colourimetric profiles is a key focus for printers using EG and this requires continually monitoring the consistency of the supplied inks. Good press registration is a must with EG, because of the critical concern for spot colour replication. In some regards, however, it is no different than that required for any high-quality process printing. At the dot level, even with 7-colour process printing, you are still only overprinting two or three colours, just like CMYK. Where registration will be an issue is with reverse type or edge acuity. This problem arises because with EG you are using two or three process colours to build up the spot colour, versus using a single spot colour ink as is done traditionally. Brand owners that are familiar with EG, understand this concern and in some cases are willing to address it in the design phase with modifications to the artwork (e.g ., vignettes or outlining). What’s in store? EG is not a new concept and has been growing in the flexible packaging segment in recent years. The narrow-web segment has seen much slower adoption, but many people in the industry feel that the time is right for EG to gain traction. With advances that have been made in press technology, software, profiling tools, colour measurement, and ancillary equipment the time is coming when we will see more narrow-web printers embrace EG printing.
