68 Labels Plus Labels Plus 69 UV-LED technology adds to label efficiency Achieving optimal quality in label printing is the quest of any brand-owner and getting this right involves substrate, ink and adhesive persistence in spite of climatic influences, let alone ink migration issues. “A good quality substrate will help to ensure that the printing is of good quality, ” said Amanda Jones, international Sales Manager at Paragon Inks. She cited the importance of substrate and ink suppliers working together to achieve the best possible result and the dangers of migratable products in substrates, which can affect the ink key. Amanda Jones highlighted UV LED technology, which is heat-sensitive and thus suitable for thin substrates. “It is also suitable for small, compact machines and facilitates controlled curing intensities and has a number of environmental advantages, that include workplace safety; that it operates via a UV-A wavelength; it is mercury free and has no impact on the ozone layer. From an operating point of view, it has economic benefits. “It’s energy efficient and low maintenance and its low operating temperatures means additional cooling mechanisms are typically not required.” It also has a life time of more than 20,000 hours. These UV LED technologies demonstrate huge advances over conventional lamps that typically operate at 350̊C, have a bulb life of only 500 to 2,000 hours and which require regular replacing and reflector cleaning. The growing interest in UV-curable ink technology has been attributed to the ability to print on the widest range of substrates. “This, ” said Amanda, “allows converters to broaden their application offerings to the final buyers. With UV systems, the fact that the ink remains uncured until exposed to UV light, helps to keep the inkjet nozzles open and reduces the need for maintenance cycles. “UV-LED technology saves ink compared to solvent ink chemistry. UV digital printing has opened-up new opportunities and applications, though not without limitations. The most significant limitation of LED is also its key strength: The narrow emission spectrum. A broad UV spectrum, is often needed for conventional UV digital inks to achieve good cures. These inks have been tuned to respond to the broader mercury spectrum. For older inks, the limited spectrum of LEDs can cause problems, such as insufficient cure, leading to tacky surfaces or adhesion problems. Newer inks have been developed to overcome these problems, so this limitation may no longer apply.” Also of interest, she said is X-Rite’s PantoneLIVE - a concept that uses enterprise cloud digital swatch technology. The Benefits of DIGITAL AUTOMATION TM For every flexo + die - cut job change: 10 mts of Waste, 1 Minute of Time and Half the Operating Costs “The brand-owner has the opportunity to define the master and dependent colours for everyone in the global supply chain, to achieve consistent results.” In some cases, the substrate or print process may make it difficult to achieve the correct colour resulting in product variation. A master and dependent colour standard from PantoneLIVE, reduces production variation as the colour aim point is realistic, achievable, and explicit, and has a known relationship to the master colour standard. Hence the colour yields a production variation of less than one. The benefits of using PantoneLIVE are clear, the digital tools give unprecedented control and consistency from different print processes and material. Across all packaging formats we see a reduction in colour variance of around 50% as well as saving time by establishing one colour target, that can be applied to all related designs.
