Labels Plus 1 From the editor “And that was the end of drupa for another four years... Once again, the attendees at this year’s drupa exhibition in Dusseldorf have come back with tall tales and true of the kilometres walked; hands shaken; and the litres of Germany’s finest beer drunk over the 11 days of the trade exhibition. While the event is a showcase of the latest and greatest across all areas of the print and packaging world, there were quite a number of narrow-web suppliers showing-off their products at this year’s show. Where there was a move to make drupa a 3-year show rather than every 4 years, international print machinery manufacturers banded together and told the drupa organisers that it was to stay at every four years – due to the calendar of other shows and the possible conflict if changed to a 3-year interval. The theme of drupa 2016 was: “Touch the Future” and when you’re faced with viewing 1,837 exhibitors who hail from 54 countries, and spread across 19 halls, you know you must go there with a plan reminiscent of the D-Day landing. Familiar narrow-web identities like ABG, HP, Kodak, Fuji and others, were all part of this monumental show that attracted close to 300,000 visitors from around the print and packaging world. HP has reported that they sold 50 digital presses from their stand during the show, and Mark Daws from Currie Group speaks about the show from an exhibitor’s perspective in this edition. Another story looks at the international label market and where it will be in 2018, and the former President of LATMA, Mark Easton, has supplied a small article on the newly-evolving FPLMA which sees LATMA merging with the ANZFTA into a new industry association. Sustainability is a word that’s never too far away from the label industry, and in this edition we look at the 2016 FINAT Recycling Awards and hear about what companies are doing to reduce waste in the manufacturing chain. Melbourne label figure Lindsey Boyd gets a gurnsey, when “Labels Plus” looks at this career as he heads off to join Aldus Engineering, plus, we look at the new Xeikon STAR training program that has been unveiled. In the next issue of “Labels Plus” we shall be having a preview of the Labelexpo Chicago to be held in the Windy City in September this year. While not as big at Brussels, those who have ventured to this event in the past all agree that the smaller easier to navigate show, has a charm all of its own.
