Surely it’s extremely rare – if ever – that an Australian printing company has been able to conduct business continuously for 130 years and more uniquely, be owned and operated by the same family that established it. But this is the case for Peacock Brothers whose plants and sales offices can be found in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Western Australia and New Zealand. Opening their doors for business in Melbourne central in 1888 in Collins Street, the original business was started by Mr Earnest Peacock as a general printing business, catering to a growing expansion of Melbourne’s commercial success after the gold rush of the 1850’s. Its reputation for quality and on-time delivery saw the Peacock Brothers business requiring larger premises located further down Collins Street. Around the start of WW1 in 1914, the company saw an opportunity as business in Melbourne became more sophisticated (for the times) and started providing businesses with accounting systems, as well as continuing to meet the print needs of a diverse range of companies. Even in those days, the company had its eyes set on expansion and by the start of the Great War employed more than 100 people across the Australia/New Zealand region. Always with an eye for the changing business conditions of the time, the period through to the 20th Century saw the company import and market marking systems; the opening of a training school for young recruits who were needed to meet their customers' needs in the accounting and stock-taking areas; and the sale and distribution of the Casio calculator rage. Throughout their constant march forward, Peacock's continued to be involved in the printing business and a major milestone occurred in 1978 when the company decided to sell its general printing business and concentrate on the label business. Besides label printing, a growing part of the business has been its data capture business and entry into areas like the hospital and medical industries. Its list of services and products today, covers Data Management, Printing Solutions, and Digital Healthcare Offerings. As Ruth Kaplan, Managing Director, said at the 130-year celebration: “It gave me great pride to join Peacock Brothers’ family, employees, clients and business partners, celebrating the company’s 130th year. We have come a long way since 1888, and are very excited about our future as the company continues to thrive and keeps re-inventing itself.” During the past 130 years Peacock Bothers has built a tradition of providing customers with innovative, cutting-edge solutions and services for a variety of industries including transport and logistics, manufacturing, distribution, and healthcare, added Ryan McGrath, General Manager. The company looks forward to the next 130 years and the opportunities that will be offered it as it continues to service Australasian businesses.
